Comic news… short one from Kino…
Went to Kinokuniya yesterday with ML… (the whole purpose was to catch Master and Commander… which I will comment a bit later). Was very pleased to see a new series of Marvel and DC comic books printed in Singapore/Malaysia. What joy as these are 6-7 issued series in one small paperback, priced at RM20-22.
Come on people… it doesnt get cheaper than that!!! RM3+ for just 22 fully coloured comic book!!!!
Some of the titles are must haves. Spider-Girl (very good series on the ‘future’ adventures of May Parker and her family…. Peter is crippled and MJ is a business woman), Batman: Hush (Jim Lee, from 90’s nostalgia, as artist), Ultimate X-men, Ultimate Spider-man (revamps of the said heroes, with a 21st century outlook) and much more.
Go get em.

The Far Side of the World
I dont like Russell Crowe based on the news on his personal life and character. However, on screen is another matter. He seems almost the leader that you would love to emulate. That is good acting if ever I could call it that.
Coupled with his good on screen friendship with Paul Bettany (the same co-star from “Beautiful Mind”), and you have strong characterisation of two different individuals who are bound by basic trust and friendship.
The story, is your normal sea swashbuckling type. Predator and Prey. The Surprise against the Acheron. English vs French. During the Napolean era. Pre-Waterloo no doubt. However, it builds for the first 3/4 of the film, and leaves with a whimper (to me at least). However, the strong characterisation is sure to make this a very good film.
