January 2003

Aches my heart…,

while having my dinner at the local Indian open restaurant, to see this old man bending over the table, after its former occupants finished and left, packing the leftovers for himself. At first, I did not really register what he was doing, as I thought how sad to have this old man do the dishes and cleaning the table. But, I observed what he was doing: pouring the leftover rice, curry, chicken bones and other stuff that even now gross me out, on a plate. Then he went to a waiter (person in charge) and gave him one ringgit or something which he rummaged from his pockets. Walking slowly to the steps leading to the road, he takes a plastic from the stall and pours the remnants of the plate into the plastic, ties it up and gets on his trolley. I saw that his trolley is full of old cardboards and other plastic bags. It seems to me that he is one of those people whom I have seen, who rummages through rubbish bins and other waste, searching for things that are usable.

It is so heart aching. I really want to help. But then… what can I do? There are people like this around us. Dont kid ourselves. It is not a happy place, this world. Heaven is not a place on earth. No matter how wonderfully sung the song is… heaven is never reflected on this world that is full of sin, imperfection, violence, anger, greed… sadness, hunger, suffering…

Let us hope on the most beautiful verse in the bible that I hang on to… the only hope which I trully trully believe in and pray daily to see one day… it is the one promise that always, and I really do mean always, brings a joy into my heart: This is actually a glimpse of what heaven is like when this earth is ready to pass away…

Therefore they are before the throne of God,
and serve him day and night in his temple;

and he who sits on the throne
will shelter them with his presence.

They shall hunger no more,
neither thirst anymore;
the sun shall not strike them,
nor any scorching heat.

For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of living water,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes

Revelation 7:15-17

This is what Christians (true Christians) over the ages has been willing to die for. They did not see it physically, but yet, welcomed it even from a distance of merely knowing it within their hearts. Faith. Beautiful.
